Bacteriólogo e inmunólogo británico. Mientras enseñaba en la Escuela de medicina del ejército en Netley (desde 1892), desarrolló una inmunización contra la
tifoidea, que utilizaba bacilos tíficos muertos. Esto hizo de Gran Bretaña la única nación cuyas tropas estaban inmunizadas contra la tifoidea al comienzo de la primera guerra mundial, la primera guerra donde murieron menos soldados británicos por infecciones que por traumatismos. También desarrolló vacunas contra la tuberculosis entérica y la neumonía. Fue muy conocido por preconizar las vacunas autógenas (vacunas preparadas con las propias bacterias del paciente).
